Alakara Guest House

In 2015, Ingeborg and William Oluka established Okra Farm in the remote village of Kobulin, located in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja region. This farm is a thriving agricultural venture, home to cows, goats, chickens, sheep, and honey bees, along with a variety of crops including maize, green grams, and ground nuts.

Recognizing the need to accommodate visitors traveling to Uganda with Alakara Travels, Ingeborg and William decided to expand their vision. In 2017, they began building Alakara Guest House. This guest house, completed in 2018, offers a unique and immersive experience for guests, allowing them to connect deeply with the local culture and landscape.

Alakara Guest House features five beautifully crafted huts, built using traditional techniques and locally sourced materials. While the huts are not self-contained, a common ablution block with toilets and showers ensures guests’ comfort. The guest house is surrounded by a meticulously developed garden, filled with a variety of fruit trees and flowers, while preserving the original trees that dot the arid landscape.

Visitors to Alakara Guest House can participate in a range of cultural activities, such as traditional music workshops, farm walks, market visits, village tours, and traditional cooking classes. The large grass-thatched lounge area provides a serene spot to relax in hammocks and enjoy the sounds of nature.

In line with their commitment to sustainability, Okra Farm and Alakara Guest House utilize solar power for their energy needs. Additionally, they have drilled a water pump that not only supplies water for the guest house and farm but also benefits the community. Local residents can fetch water from the pump and bring their animals to drink, enhancing the well-being of the entire village.

At Okra Farm and Alakara Guest House, guests are welcomed like family by the dedicated staff. The chef prepares delicious local dishes using fresh produce from the farm and nearby markets, ensuring a flavorful and authentic culinary experience.

Through the combination of Okra Farm and Alakara Guest House, Ingeborg and William Oluka have created a haven where visitors can relax, learn, and connect with the vibrant culture and stunning landscape of Karamoja.

Guest Information

Booking and inquiries may be made on the contact form, or directly to Betty, the Guest House Manager at 0771458882/755619142.

Due to our remote location, please book at least two days in advance, to ensure that we’re able to organize the meals according to your preferences. We can cater for most dietary requirements, as long as you provide us the details in advance.

Being situated in a farm, as our guest you are likely to encounter farm animals like goats, sheep, cows and chicken, as well as our dog, that serves as a pet, guard and shepard. Even if the animals are not expected in the guest house compound, we use the traditional methods of herdsmen driving the animals out to the fields to graze. As such, it does happen that some of them find their way to the guest house garden to munch on the delicious hibiscus flowers that grow there!
