Here are some of our favorite things to do in Northeastern Uganda:
1 Visit a Karimojong Manyatta
A manyatta is a traditional homestead in the Karamoja region in the extreme northeast of Uganda. To protect the family and its livestock against wild animals and thieves, it is constructed as an intricate labyrinth of fences with small doors that can easily be closed at night. To enter, you have to stoop down and get through several doors, passing through the outer courtyards until finally coming to the main living area of the family.
Climb Mount Elgon
Mount Elgon is the forth highest mountain in Uganda, at 4321 metre above sea level. It is also the world’s largest solitary mountain, with the diameter of the mountain’s base more than 80 kilometres! A hike to the summit takes 3-5 days, depending on the route. It is a relatively easy climb, with no technical climbing. Children can also hike to the summit, as long as you factor in more time. Mount Elgon offers breathtaking views, unique flora and fauna, well-developed trails, and as it is still a hidden gem- very few other hikers along the way! This is a great hike for those of us who love being close to nature, enjoying the views and the journey.
