Positive Impact
Our core values are
• Caring for our travellers
• Caring for the communities
• Caring for the environment
• Caring for our partners and service providers
All our journeys are designed to create the best experience to the traveller, while at the same time having a positive impact on the environment and society.
Since Alakara Travels was established in 2018, these values have been at the core of what we are doing. We believe that every journey we curate in Uganda should contribute to preserving Uganda’s unique biodiversity and wildlife, as well as to the well-being of the local communities you visit during your adventure. For Alakara, this is not a side effect, but a non-negotiable principle that guides everything we do.
Our sustainability initiatives
Alakara Travels carefully selects service providers that share our values. We actively seek out lodges, activity providers and other suppliers that are locally owned, employ local staff, treat their staff well, have good relations to the local communities in their area and actively work to minimize the negative environmental impact of their operations, through for example using solar power, reducing use of plastics, source food locally, and ensuring good waste management practices.
Alakara Travels is proud to donate 10% of our profits to scholarships for youth in the region where Alakara Guest House is located. Girls and young women are given priority for the scholarships.
Alakara Travels works closely with the local community of Kobulin, where our guest house is located. Our water comes from our own borehole, which the community members use for their own consumption, as well as a watering point for cattle during the dry season. We engage local music groups to showcase their proud traditions in music, dance and drama, thus creating an opportunity for our visitors to engage in authentic experiences, and mutual respect and appreciation, in addition to providing the music groups with an income for the groups.
On safari in Uganda, the entry fees you pay in the national parks, as well as the activity fees, gorilla tracking lisences and so forth, contribute the largest part of the budget for Uganda Wildlife Authority’s efforts to protect the parks and the wildlife through their presence, and through various programmes aimed at empowering communities around the national parks, reducing human-wildlife conflict, and educate the population and the travellers about conservation and environment.
